California Wedding #2 - Red Wine Wedding

"Napa Valley AVA is an American Viticultural Area located in Napa County, California. Napa Valley is considered one of the premier wine regions in the world. Records of commercial wine production in the region date back to the nineteenth century, but premium wine production dates back only to the 1960s. The combination of Mediterranean climate, geography and geology of the region are conducive to growing quality wine grapes. John Patchett established the Napa Valley's first commercial vineyard in 1858. In 1861 Charles Krug established another of Napa Valley's first commercial wineries in St. Helena" (Napa Valley).

Napa Valley Grapes

"In 1976, the region got a boost from the Paris Wine Tasting of 1976, which featured a Napa Valley Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon besting several famous French labels in a blind tasting format. The results of this tasting cemented the region's reputation as a producer of world class wines. Today Napa Valley features more than 450 wineries that grow grape varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Zinfandel, among others. While winemakers may produce wines from specific AVAs within the valley, many wines are made as a blend from grapes grown on the valley floor and the surrounding hillsides (Napa Valley).
Napa Valley is such a staple in California that it has to be highlighted as a wedding theme. It is such a beautiful place to get married and Red Wine is an easy and perfectly fitting theme.

Flowers:
The shade of the flowers depends on what the bride likes. When it comes to wine colours, their is a darker shade and a lighter shade. In all flowers it is hard to get a perfect shade match to the colour scheme or invitation colours even.

The Bride and Groom:
The groom always gets the short end of the stick when it comes to getting dressed for his wedding. There are different styles and options for tuxedos but mostly they are all the same so the only real thing to worry about is the ties colour and matching it to the theme. Some couples choose just to go with a black tie that matches the suit and not bother matching the colour scheme at all. The important thing is the bride's dress, everyone looks at it and it can be the thing that makes or breaks the bride's whole day. The wedding dress never should have to match a theme, just like love you can't help which one is The One and when the bride finds it she will fall in love. A nice option though is always something that highlights the colour scheme.

The Invitations:
A good idea for any wedding especially for out of town guests are Save the Date Cards, they are sent out earlier than invitations and they give the guests time to plan and prepare to take time off work, make travel arrangements, fine a place to stay and whatever else they need to take care of to make it to the wedding. Save the Date Cards don't always have to match the theme or colour scheme of the wedding, they can be simple cards but the invitations should highlight what the wedding is centered around. Also, if the couple finds two similarly themed invitations and doesn't want to choose just one, they can mix and match the invitation sets. For the wedding, the Red Wine theme, two perfect sets to choose from are the Vintage Vineyard Set (RSVP Card, Guest Information Card, Envelope Seals, and Address Stickers) and the Wine Theme (RSVP Card, Enclosure Card, and Envelope Seal with Address Sticker).

Photographer and Videographer:
An amazing wedding photographer would be Lumitone. There are a few examples of photos and videos on their website. Depending on the couple, if they are from California they may know of other photographers and may want to go with them.

The Ceremony:
Vintage Inn is a beautiful, luxury resort in Napa Valley that is a perfect place to get married. The grounds are absolutely breath taking and they have everything the couple needs right there. They cater and have an amazing menu with great food.

The Rings:
Naturally for rings, anything is fine. Rings rarely follow the theme of a wedding or the colour scheme. Usually the wedding ring is whatever matches the engagement ring or whatever catches the couples eye. There is nothing wrong with not matching the theme and most people don't even see the wedding ring anyways. The ring below is unisex and is braided rose gold. It looks like grape vines and it has a tint to the gold.

The Reception:
As the guests walk around after the ceremony talking and drinking wine, a great finger food type appetizer to have served would be a Pancetta, Blue Cheese, Pesto and Arugula Crostini. This are all things that go great with the Cabernet Savignon Napa Valley is famous for and they are little hand held mouth fulls perfect for the small gap of time between ceremony and reception when the bride and groom take pictures. This wedding is best suited for a smaller crowd and with smaller crowds it is often a great opportunity to choose a unique guest book, the perfect thing for this wedding is a wine bottle guest book. For this wedding there is a sit down meal and if the bride and groom which to have assigned seating, even with a small wedding, place cards are a must. To match the theme, the Vintage Vineyard and the Wine Theme are the matching set to the invitations.

The Food:
A nice way to start off a meal serving red wine would be with a Green Salad with Herbs. The herbs highlight the notes of the wine and would be a perfect pairing. To follow that any lamb dish would work well also, lamb always pairs well with a red wine. And for dessert, another great wine from Napa Valley would be a Savignon Blanc, it is a white wine and would be perfect with Roasted Figs with Goat Cheese and Honey.

The Cake:
There is no doubt that a perfect wedding cake is something that goes well with wine and matches the theme of the wedding. The cake below is a Chocolate Wine Cake with Raspberry Buttercream. It is a perfect match for most red wines, including the Cabernet Savignon that Napa Valley is famous for, and the decorations themselves are simply perfect. The grapes are a creative topper and would be perfectly fine, or the bride and groom may want to go with a more traditional Bride and Groom Topper. Grapes and the Red Wine theme are hard to find in a cake serving set, and really that isn't something that has to follow the theme anyways so any normal serving set would be perfectly fine.

Centerpieces:
For the centerpieces a great idea to match the wine theme would be to use a cutting board the length of the table (or a few of the same type of cutting boards end to end down the table), filled with foods that pair well with the wine served. In this case the wine being served is Cabernet Savignon which is a red wine that would go well with cheeses like Camembert, Brie, Cheddar, Gouda and some goat cheeses, it also goes well with cured meats like salami and prosciutto. Nice added touches can be breads and crackers, it goes well with the meat and cheese and with a little herb and olive oil on a baguette or flavoured crackers it would highlight the wines flavours. On the sweeter side, some fruits would be nice like strawberries (and strawberries dipped in chocolate also) and some nuts would be a perfect option too. If the couple doesn't like the cutting board idea a sheet of butcher paper down the middle of the table would be perfect too and since you can write on the paper it would be a great way to label the items spread out.

Write on Your Tablecloth!

Guest Favours:
Naturally the best guest favour would be a Personalized Wine Glass. These can get expensive but with a small wedding sometimes they can be fitted into the budget. Truly they are beautiful gifts for the guests and are something they can keep for ever and use over and over again. For the wedding party and the parents of the bride and groom a nice thank you gift would be a set of Red Wine Glasses.

Thank You Cards:
Thank you cards don't always have to match, some couples choose to send photos of their wedding with a thank you note on the back or just a plain simple card. Anything is fine really, it's the gesture that counts. With an invitation set usually the Thank You Card will match the invitations like in this Vintage Vineyard one or a nice one that doesn't match would be a Wine Theme one.

Places to See:
There are so many wonderful things to do and see in California. For sports fans, the Staple Center (home to the L.A Sparks, the L.A Clippers, the L.A Lakers, and the L.A Kings), and Dodger's Stadium. For the children at heart, Disneyland, Legoland, Sea World, San Diego Zoo, and Knotts Berry Farm are all must see and wonderful family friendly places. California has many museums and national/State parks and they all have something to offer. San Simeon State Park, (is one of the oldest units of the California State Park System. The coastal bluffs and promontories of the scenic park offer unobstructed views of the ocean and rocky shore.) Larson Volcanic National Park, ( is a United States National Park in northeastern California. The dominant feature of the park is Lassen Peak, the largest plug dome volcano in the world and the southern-most volcano in the Cascade Range) and Death Valley National Park, (The park protects the northwest corner of the Mojave Desert and contains a diverse desert environment of salt-flats, sand dunes, badlands, valleys, canyons, and mountains. It is the largest national park in the lower 48 states and has been declared an International Biosphere Reserve). As for Museums the California State Capital Museum is an obvious one, there is also the J.Paul Getty Museum, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Finally, of course Napa Valley is a must see, touring around all the different vineyards and sampling all the wine it has to offer is a must do especially after having a Wine Themed Wedding!
